Cold press juicers make life easier in many ways – they make juicing healthier, faster, and cleanup is often easier. So can cold press juicers make the seeding and peeling part of juicing easier? Well, the answer is yes and no. Here we explore which fruits you can chuck into cold press juicers and which ones need a bit more prep
Do I need to remove the peel before juicing?
Leaving the peel on can reduce prep time and give your juice an extra kick in nutrients. Many fruits and vegetables keep much of their vitamins and nutrients in the peel. Fruits and veggies with thin peels should definitely be left on – this includes apples, grapes, cucumbers, and the like. You can also juice lemon peels, but we recommend using no more than half a peel a day. Too much lemon peel can be tough on the digestive system. You may not have guessed it, but you can also juice banana , kiwi skins, and watermelon rinds. Just remember – if you are juicing with the peel on, make sure to wash your produce thoroughly. And if you can, buy organic.
There are certain peels cold press juicers simply cannot handle. Squash peels are simply too hard and should be removed before juicing. Larger citrus fruits can contain oils that are hard on the digestion system and should also be peeled before juicing.
Do I have to remove seeds before juicing?
Many cold press juicers can easily take on small seeds – juicing and mixing them in so you barely even notice them. However, only fruits with small seeds should be thrown in whole. Fruits with pits or stones should be de-seeded before being thrown in to a cold press juicer. This includes nectarines, peaches, mangoes, apricots, plums, and cherries.
If you’re juicing watermelon, oranges, or lemons – feel free to throw them in!
Juicing Apple Seeds – Watch Out!
Apple seeds are the right size for cold press juicers. However, apple seeds contain a minute amount of cyanide in them which throws some people off. Cyanide is a toxin. Keep in mind though that you would need to eat at least 80 -100 apple seeds a day in order for the cyanide to have any affect. This would be equivalent to eating the seeds from about 8 apples a day. So, as long as you aren’t eating too many apple seeds, you could throw them in with everything else. Just keep in mind, apple seeds aren’t all that good for you.
